New Mexico mountains

We had a long, hard ride today, with over 4000 feet of climbing, headwinds in the afternoon, lots of gravel and glass on the shoulder from time to time, and even a little chipseal to bounce us around.  Dinner, great barbecued ribs for the carnivores, was a pretty quiet affair.

Wish I knew the name of the snowy peak we’ve been seeing since yesterday.

Impressive horns, but he wouldn’t look at me.

We stopped for lunch in front of the post office in the tiny town of Tinnie. We went through six small towns in about a 20 mile stretch of road.  Each one had a post office.  A couple were so little they didn’t have much more than the post office.  Why the post office loses money.

We hoped for ice cream in this store but only found lots of chili products.

Murals at the visitors center in Ruidoso, where we are staying.  Billy the Kid must have roamed through this part of the country.  We were too late to visit the Western Museum to get details.

  1. your trip continues to be amazing!

re the Postal Service: the principal reason they lose money is that they are required to pre-fund their pension obligations, which is not required of either private companies or other government agencies. These little outposts help them make money by making deliveries that FedEx and UPS don't want to ("the last mile" or in the this case "miles" - many, many).
