More smooth sailing

we had another short ride today, 44 miles to Big Spring, Texas, our tailwind still with us.  Big Spring is a town that never quite lived up to the expectations of the builders of our 13 story hotel back in 1929.  After an Air Force base closed in 1978 and the oil industry moved to Midland and Odessa, the hotel closed.  It was resurrected and beautifully restored in 2012 and is by far the fanciest place we’ve stayed.  That said, there is almost nothing else except two bail bond establishments in the downtown area.  We were delighted to get in early and luxuriate in very nice surroundings.

20th and 21st century energy,

Big Spring gets its name from the spring that was a major water source for Native Americans, Spanish explorers, and pioneers moving west.  The site is now a park which commemorates the history, including pointing out the destruction wrought by U.S. settlers, hunters, and armies.

Not our usual style.

Look where the star is now!  We are almost all the way across Texas.

  1. Sounds like another great day/night. Reminds me of the fancy hotel/conference center in Howard S.D. - our desitnation after the Corn Palace. A beautiful hotel in a town with not much else.
