The high point of our 42 mile ride to Nyack was biking across the new Cuomo Bridge, which replaced the Tappan Zee Bridge a couple of years ago. If you had told me when I was stuck in traffic on the Tappan Zee that I would someday bike across the Hudson at that spot, I would have thought it a crazy idea. The 3.5 mile span, four traffic lanes in each direction, include a 12 foot wide protected bike and walking lane. It was one of the most secure bridges I’ve ever crossed, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy the view.
The ride today was almost completely on rail lines of the “Old Put” commuter line, which ran from 1881 to 1958. The trails were in excellent shape and well used by bikers and walkers, human and canine. I like seeing my tax dollars, or at least someone’s, tax dollars at work like this.
We’ve noted a fair bit of Revolutionary War history along our route, including riding through Yorktown Heights today, and past the Battle of Saratoga National Monument last week. We’re conserving our energy, commenting on the sites without stopping
Old tracks still in evidence along the trail.
Riding across, then looking back from Nyack.
