Idyllic riding — August 20.

The morning ride was about as perfect as a bike ride gets.  We were on rolling country roads, saw interesting old houses, went through small towns, even had a couple of horses showing off for us in their field. And I saw a fox when we were briefly on a trail.  It was all so nice that we didn’t stop for many pictures.

An impressive village hall in Honeoye Falls.

I grew up loving the cobblestone houses in Southern Wisconsin, so I was interested to pass several as we rode yesterday and today.  With a little Google research, I learned that 75 percent of all the cobblestone buildings in the country are in the area around Rochester, New York.  Cobblestones were formed by rocks being rolled by glaciers, and with the construction of the Erie Canal, great quantities of them were excavated and used for building.  Much of southern Wisconsin, also a glaciated region, was settled by people from western New York, so I assume they brought the know-how with them and used stones that they found as they cleared fields.

A fine ending to a fine day
