Facing excessive heat warnings and senior citizen bikers, our leaders Ken and Nancy opted to keep us mostly off the roads today and tomorrow. We rode all of 21 miles today to the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bride, now the longest recreational bridge in the country. It was the first railroad bridge across the Hudson, and yesterday at Bear Mountain we crossed the first automobile bridge across the river. For various reasons, Nancy had missed riding across this bridge on other trips to the Hudson Valley, so she was determined that she, and we, not miss it this trip. Ken rented a UHaul truck and met us at the bridge at 10 am. We loaded bikes and luggage in the truck, and riders, in two trips, rode in the van to our motel in Saugerties, safely out of the heat. I was sorry to miss today’s ride, but as we go back into Albany again tomorrow, I’m not so disappointed about not biking that route.
Entering the walkway
I never get tired of views out over water.
This impressive statue Sojourner Truth was at one end of the bridge.
After tomorrow, our group will be much smaller, as all these people will leave. 😢
