It wasn’t too hot, the hills weren’t too many or too steep, no one got lost, our hotel checked us in promptly, we saw interesting sights, there was ice cream at the end. What a fine day of biking, We rode 47 miles to Johnstown, New York, mostly along the Mohawk River on the Erie Canalway Trail. We also rode the Alco Heritage Trail in Schenectady, which was one of the most interesting parts of the day. Alco is the American Locomotive Company, which for many years was the largest manufacturer of railroad locomotives in the nations. Many signs along the way illustrated some of the history and legends of U.S. railroads, along with other side chapters, such as the conversion of the plant to produce Sherman tanks during World War II.
We had time to relax and enjoy the river.
The Alco plant no longer stands, replaced by a very attractive apartment complex. But there is still evidence of the manufacturing history in the Mohawk Valley, such as the old factory across the river.
