We rode exactly 53 miles, by my odometer, from Johnstown to Utica today. In 2013, I rode almost the same route in the opposite direction. A lovely ride, either way. We rode about 20 miles on bucolic country roads back down to the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal and followed the river into Utica.
Our route largely follows the Empire State Trail, and for several days we are on parts of the Erie Canalway Trail. I was impressed with New York’s network of trails and marked routes in 2013, and it is much more extensive now. Parts of the Canalway Trail we biked today didn’t exist then, and well paved segments we rode today were very rough and barely bikeable then.
I love seeing locks, always hoping to see a boat going through.
Fort Herkimer Church, built in 1753, is one of the oldest churches in the state. It had a revolving gun in the bell tower during the Revolutionary War.
It’s feeling like late summer here. After last week’s heat, it is much cooler and dryer now, and the flowers look like a changing season.
About 4 miles before the end of the ride, we found today’s ice cream. People teased me that my bike turns in of its own accord when it senses ice cream.
