But the legs sure were tired. We had a gentle tail wind on a 37 mile ride from Newcastle to Custer. Of course,we did have about 2700 feet of climbing as we wound through the Black Hills. We are riding out very early every morning, since the temperature is getting well into the 90's by afternoon. We had the whole afternoon in Custer, and most of us used it to do laundry, wash bikes, and mail home packages of heavy clothing we won't be needing from here on out. I celebrated my first time ever in South Dakota by having a bison burger and a very good South Dakota beer for dinner.
We have passed many refineries in past few days, but this one today is the only red one.
Someone has a sense of humor.
Once again we found a better sign as we were exiting the state than when we entered. Given the tough time we had in Wyoming, no one was sad to leave it. Ken and Nancy, our leaders, tell us that Wyoming and South Dakota are the toughest stretch of the trip. We'll see what South Dakota throws at us.
