Prevailing winds in the West are generally from the west. Clearly, I needed to spend more time exploring the term "generally". For the last few days we have traveled east south-east, and the winds have consistently blown from that general direction. Today we rode out of Gillette with a nice 10 mph crossing, and 78 miles later fought our way into Newcastle with at least 20 mph headwinds. It was a struggle to ride at 8 miles an hour down hill, pedaling hard. As I was laboring through Wyoming energy country, at least learning where those 11/2 miles long coal trains originate, avoiding carcasses of rabbits, deer, fox, and the occasional rattlesnake, I realized I was in both a location and situation that I had never imagined.
Antelope bounding away as we rode out of the church in Gillette this morning.
With only about half a million people in Wyoming, with an area greater than all of New England, with Hawaii and Delaware tossed in, there is a lot of empty space.
It's nice they think so. We were certainly glad to get to Upton, as that was where our lunch stop was.
Sign on the wall of the Senior Citizen Center where we are "camping" tonight. They must be a lively crew.
