Lovely roads, more heat. May 12

We were smarter today and started riding before 7:30 on our 42 mile ride to West Branch, a town we haven’t seen, as we are in another Airbnb out in the country. We started the ride all following Nancy, who has an uncanny ability to memorize the route.  Even on bike paths, there were lots of twists and turns, so we avoided any number of corner debates.  Once out of town, we were on rural roads, with nice views and somewhat more shade. We stopped more frequently in shady spots.  I was fine until the final mile, which was on a dirt road up a hill.

Nancy had enough of leading us once we were out of town.  We are about to head out at differing speeds.

Looking back at Cedar Rapids, a bigger city than I had realized.  Since hotels and motels seem to be clumped on the edges of town, we frequently don’t see much of where we are staying.  My favorite sight riding through the city was the huge Quaker Oats plant.

One of rest stops was the tiny town of Morse, which offered this old cupola as its public library.

This hippo lives across from the library, in front of the old general store.

Iowa wine from a local winery. I won’t be asking Tony to stock it.

Merry Christmas.  We are surmising that a 20 foot tree is too much work to take down and put back up.  But doesn’t it get a little dusty?
